Vietnam War: 50th Anniversary Veterans Recognized

The American Legion Post 59 Arturo T. Benavides Memorial Post and the League of United Latin American Citizens Veterans Council 777 hosted a commemoration in observance of the 50th Anniversary of the Vietnam War on Thursday evening.

AHEC Advocates for National Cancer Prevention

In observance of February as National Cancer Prevention Month, the Area Health Education Center (AHEC) of the Mid Rio Grande Border joined forces with representatives from the surrounding counties of LaSalle and Zapata to increase public awareness about the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Vaccine.

AHEC observes Cervical Cancer Awareness Month

Members of the Laredo Health Coalition were on hand to help proclaim January as Cervical Cancer Awareness Month. Baylor College of Medicine sets Laredo Conference

Laredo Organization Volunteers for the Elderly and Disadvantaged

The Laredo Organized Volunteers for the Elderly and Disadvantaged (LOVED) headed by Dr. Henry Carranza, held its annual Christmas giveaway on Saturday, Dec. 23, 2017. Approximately 300 families received grocery bags and toys. Assisting with the distribution were different organization including AHEC.

AHEC Hosted a Conference LISD and UISD Nurses

The Area Health Education Center recently hosted a conference for nurses at the UT Health Regional Campus Laredo.  The goad of this conference was to provide nurses with the latest information on medical topics including anaphylaxis and genetic disorders, suicide, child abuse and stress management.  


U.S.-Mexico Health Conference / AHEC Promotes Mental Health Awareness

The goal of the binational conference was to provide information that is current and relevant to the United States -Mexico border area in regards to public health care issues including public safety, violence in schools, advance directives, border protection against plant pests and animal diseases, human papilloma virus cancer prevention and other public health. 


AHEC Provides Lesson on HPV

The Area Health Education Center continues to provide Human Papillomavirus Immunization educational trainings for health care professionals. On July 19, Dr. Oda Garcia, AHEC Community Outreach Coordinator, provided a one-to-one educational session to medical office staff serving at the Children's Clinic of Dimmit & Zavala in Carrizo Springs.

AHEC Promotes Career Paths in Biomedical Engineering

On Nov. 11, 2016 a team of biomedical engineers and scientists, lead by Dr. Marc Feldman, Professor of Medicine and Engineering at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA, presented a detailed overview on biomedical engineering careers and offered real-life examples on ways that this life changing profession can improve the quality of lives of others.

The Area Health Education Center welcomes Dr. Oda Garcia as the new Community Outreach Coordinator. Dr. Garcia joins the AHEC team as part of a new AHEC initiative that will provide communitywide outreach and cancer prevention education to schools and community groups in an effort to promote HPV vaccination services.


Youth Mental Health First Aid Training Progress Update

World War II veterans were recognized at Jarvis Plaza as the Laredo Veterans Coalition in conjunction with the Korean War Veterans Association and American Legion Post 59 hosted a ceremony marking the 74th Anniversary of the bombing of Pearl Harbor.


Mental Health Conversation Forum Helps Community

Over 57 community members attended the Community Conversation on Teen & Young Adult Mental Health cohosted by the Area Health Education Center. This gathering provided an opportunity for community members to learn techniques beneficial to coping with stress. The quarterly conversation gatherings are offered free-of-charge, and everyone is welcome to attend.


AHEC Students Learn and Serve on MLK Day

Over 37 Area Health Education Center students learned about the importance of emergency medicine and participated in hands-on demonstration activities which highlighted the equipment used on emergency transport vehicles. In addition, students were invited to volunteer at the Retama West-Nursing Home following the presentations.
