AHEC College Academy

This one-week summer program provides junior and senior high school students training in the school-to-college transition. Instruction is provided in standardized test preparation, interview skills, college admission requirements, and college application process.

AHEC Jr. Academy

The one-week program is for middle school students (6th and 7th) and it is designed to provide enhancement in science, mathematics, health science, vocabulary development and systematic approach.

AHEC Mini Academy

The one-week program is for elementary school students (4th and 5th). The hands-on curriculum is designed to provide enhancement in science, mathematics, health science vocabulary development and systematic approach.

Career Shadowing/ Mentoring

Mentors include health care professionals from the community who have agreed to participate in the program by allowing students to shadow their profession and learn the day-to-day aspects of their practice.

Community Health Literacy Programs

Asthma Screening Program: Local allergists along with professionals from the respiratory departments of Doctor’s Hospital of Laredo and Laredo Medical Center provide an opportunity to inform the community about the symptoms of asthma while screening patients. People who screen positive for asthma are encouraged to seek professional diagnosis. For those previously diagnosed, the screening provides an opportunity to discuss whether asthma symptoms are under control.

Collaboration in Health Fairs

The MRGB AHEC works in collaboration with local educational institutions, health care facilities, health care providers, and community agencies on disease prevention and health promotion.

Health Occupations Planning Exposition (HOPE)

A one-day health fair that allows students to visit with health professionals, participate in hands-on activities, and attend lectures. The goal is to promote an interest in health careers.

Motivational Seminars

Seminars are scheduled throughout the year with health professional guest speakers who encourage students to pursue health care careers. These professionals serve as role models for students.
 

SAT Workshop

SAT preparation workshops are presented to students (7th-12th) during the year for instruction and practice. Students learn test taking strategies for the SAT mathematics and verbal sections.

Summer Biomedical Enrichment Program (SBEP)

This program involves a two-day event for local medical professions to illustrate hands-on activities to junior and senior students. Students experience hands-on, one-on-one interaction with different professions.

 

Student Leadership Cub

A group of volunteers students (9th-12th) that take the lead to organize community activities to promote health wellness in our community.

 

The Prep

An Intense Admissions Test Review for Health Professions: College students interested in applying for admission to health professional schools can register for this intense review of subject matter and entrance examination material. Participants review concepts in Biology, Inorganic and Organic Chemistry, Physics, and Communication Skills.

 

Youth Health Service Corps (YHSC)

A program designed to prepare 10th grade students to interact with underserved populations in the community. The students receive training in pertinent community issues and then are placed in community agencies for a minimum of 50 hours of volunteer service.
