Volunteering Opportunities
MRGB AHEC offers a multitude of volunteer opportunities that are regularly updated on the website. In the past, AHEC has held community drives, worked with partnering community centers, and even aided vaccine clinics. Please check our volunteer tab to locate the latest volunteer opportunities.
Motivational Seminars
Motivational seminars are held throughout the year and serve to promote awareness on health careers. Such seminars in the past include (need examples). The website will be updated with the latest seminar as they occur throughout the year.
High School students
AHEC College Academy
The AHEC College Academy was one of the most popular enrichment programs for junior and senior high school students during the summer of 2020. The program prepared students for application preparation and the transition from high school to college. The program provided twenty-five hours of training with attention to academic awareness, standardized test preparation, interview skills, and the basics of the college admission process. Instruction on the math and reading portions of the SAT was a large focus during the test preparation process. Post-training, students left prepared to continue their studies with a twelve-week study plan for both the SAT and ACT examinations.
Educational field trips
AHEC sponsors field trips to universities such as Texas A&M International University and Laredo College for prospective university students.
Health Occupations Planning Exposition (H.O.P.E)
The H.O.P.E program is a one-day health fair for students who are interested in health careers. Students get to meet health professionals, participate in hands-on activities, and attend lectures.
AHEC Student Leadership Club
The AHEC Student Leadership Club is a group of 8th to 12th graders from various middle and high schools across the counties AHEC serves. The program’s primary focus is developing leadership skills, volunteering at AHEC community events, and creating student-led projects that serve the community. Students are encouraged to work together to identify areas of the community that require aid and create creative solutions that will benefit those in need. The club currently holds 900 members who participate in club events and volunteering opportunities. Most recently, the club had a collection drive for the Laredo Animal Protective Society (LAPS) where they collected items for cats and dogs. During the Christmas season, the club collects and delivers toys to children in the pediatric units in local hospitals.
In its most recent rendition, the Student Leadership Club has shifted to an online format via zoom where students meet twice a week, every Tuesday and Thursday. This format will continue until it is safe to hold in person meetings again. SAT workshop
SAT workshops are provided to students from 7th to 12th that would like to prepare themselves for the SAT examination. Instruction includes test taking strategies on the math and verbal sections of the SAT. These workshops are held throughout the year and will be updated on the website when the next one is available.
Youth Health Service Corps Training
The Youth Health Service Corps training is a nationally recognized health career awareness and recruitment program that was initiated in 2007. Students in the program learn about health careers, develop leadership skills, and learn ways to help underserved populations in the community. Students will receive training in community health issues and utilize that knowledge to volunteer a minimum of 50 hours to the community. This program is offered throughout the school year.
