 As a community-based nonprofit agency, the Mid Rio Grande Border AHEC links students to health careers, professionals to educational resources and citizens to healthy living.  This is accomplished by offering continuing education, health career awareness, and health literacy throughout the communities.

Annual U.S.-Mexico Regional Binational Health Conference about Diseases and Emergencies Updates

A two-day conference is held once a year to discuss medically related topics and provide updates on matters of health that pertain to the U.S.-Mexico Border Region.  It is hosted by MRGB AHEC in collaboration with the Texas Department of State Health Services-Public Health Region 11.

This two-day virtual conference took place August 12–13, 2021.  The conference provided information regarding the local perspective on public health issues, migrants, and health, an overview of the COVID-19 pandemic in Laredo, Texas, a detailed presentation on COVID-19 and its current vaccines. 

Annual Update in Medicine Conference

A two-day medical conference designed to provide the primary care physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and other health professionals with current evidence-based information about medical conditions that are of primary concern in their practice. Experts in their field offer a live presentation and invite the audience to engage in a question-and-answer session. The program includes a forum that provides the latest medical information about treatment, diagnostic modalities, and ongoing research in an environment conducive to group discussion and the exchange of ideas.

It will be a two-day virtual conference that will take place Friday, October 22, 2021, from 12:00 pm–6:00 pm and Saturday, October 23, 2021, from 8:00 am–5:00 pm.  Topics for this year’s conference include advance directives, concussions, COVID-19, diabetes, depression, ethics, geriatric mental health, hypertension, lymphedema, suicide and grieving, telehealth, and vaping.  Up to 12 CEU’s could be provided for practicing providers. 

Annual Domestic Violence Conference

A one-day conference to promote and create awareness about domestic violence issues in the community. The conference is a community effort to breaking the cycle of domestic violence. This program offers lectures and presentations on issues relating to the victim, the family, and the community. The conference serves a multidisciplinary audience and representatives from the law enforcement, education, health care, and community service agencies attend the program and receive continuing education credits.

It will be a one-day virtual conference that will take place Thursday, October 14, 2021, from 8:30, am–12:30 pm.  CEU/CLE credits will be provided.  Law Enforcement will receive a Certificate of Completion and Evaluation Form.

MRGB AHEC serves 5 counties

MRGB AHEC serves the counties of Dimmit, Duval, La Salle, Webb and Zapata. The people of these counties count on AHEC to provide health and wellness educational programs.

A few programs offered include:

Mental health is a growing topic in our community and AHEC wants to help the community in any way they can. We do this by providing education on mental health topics, training sessions on how to respond to youth in a crisis and holding a mental health annual conference to promote awareness among health professionals.
